How to Reset Bixby if It Stops Responding (Works in U.S. & Canada)

If Bixby has stopped responding on your Samsung phone, here are the exact reset steps I use on U.S. and Canadian models — from clearing voice data to fully restarting Bixby Services.

Every once in a while, Bixby just… stops listening. I’ve had it freeze mid-command on my S24 Ultra (U.S. unlocked) and refuse to wake on my A35 5G Canadian unit. In most cases, the fix isn’t complicated — but Samsung spreads the settings around different menus, so it helps to follow the reset flow in the right order. Here are the exact steps I personally use whenever Bixby becomes unresponsive in 2025.

Why Bixby Stops Responding

Based on what I’ve seen across S-series and A-series devices in North America, Bixby usually breaks because of:

  • corrupted voice model data
  • stuck cache inside Bixby Voice / Bixby Service
  • mic permission being turned off after an update
  • a bug in One UI’s Side Key integration
The good news: all of these are fixable — and none require factory reset.

1. Restart Bixby the Simple Way

Before digging deeper, try this — it fixes the issue more often than I expected.

Steps:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Apps.
  3. Search for Bixby Voice.
  4. Tap Force stop.
  5. Open the app again from the app drawer.

On my S22, Bixby needed a few seconds to “initialize” again — it’s normal. If it freezes immediately after opening, continue to the deeper resets below.

2. Clear Bixby Cache & Data (Most Reliable Reset)

This is the reset that almost always fixes the problem when Bixby won’t respond to voice or Side Key activation.

Steps:

  1. Open Settings → Apps.
  2. Open Bixby Voice.
  3. Tap Storage.
  4. Tap Clear cache.
  5. Then tap Clear data (this resets voice training).

Heads-up: Clearing data means you’ll need to retrain your voice model — it’s quick but necessary.

3. Reset the “Hi Bixby” Voice Model

Sometimes the wake phrase freezes even though the app is fine. I’ve had this happen randomly after an OTA update.

Steps:

  1. Open the Bixby app.
  2. Tap Menu (≡).
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Open Voice wake-up.
  5. Tap Reset voice model.
  6. Retrain with the on-screen prompts.

On Canadian A-series models, the “Reset voice model” button sometimes appears only after toggling Voice Wake-Up off → on.

4. Re-Enable Bixby Microphone Permission

One UI occasionally disables microphone access after updates — especially on certain U.S. carrier builds (AT&T and T-Mobile have done this to me twice).

Steps:

  1. Go to Settings → Apps.
  2. Find Bixby Voice.
  3. Tap Permissions.
  4. Enable Microphone.
  5. Enable Nearby devices if available.

If the Microphone permission is stuck on “Denied,” toggle it off and on once — it usually refreshes correctly the second time.

5. Reset Bixby From the Service Layer (Deep Reset)

This step deals with the Bixby Service component — the behind-the-scenes part that sometimes crashes silently.

Steps:

  1. Open Settings → Apps.
  2. Tap the 3-dot menuShow system apps.
  3. Search for Bixby Service.
  4. Open Storage.
  5. Tap Clear cache.
  6. Optional: Tap Clear data if the issue persists.

Human quirk: On my S23 (Verizon model), the Bixby Service screen took unusually long to load, almost like it was rebuilding its logs.

6. Reset Bixby Side Key Integration

If the Side Key stops calling Bixby, this usually brings it back.

Steps:

  1. Open Settings → Advanced features.
  2. Tap Side key.
  3. Switch to any other option → reboot → switch back to Bixby.

I’ve fixed unresponsive Side Key triggers several times using this exact toggle trick — especially on the S24 after One UI 6.1 updates.

7. Update Bixby & System Modules (2025 Trick)

Samsung pushes Bixby updates through Galaxy Store — not Play Store. Many users miss this.

Steps:

  1. Open Galaxy Store.
  2. Tap your Profile → Updates.
  3. Install updates for:
    • Bixby Voice
    • Bixby Service
    • Samsung Voice Input

On my A55, Bixby fully revived after a 68 MB Bixby Voice patch that wasn’t listed in general changelogs.

8. Final Reset Checklist (Quick Test)

After completing the steps, test these:

  • Say “Hi Bixby” → should wake instantly
  • Press Side Key → Bixby must open without delay (if assigned)
  • Ask a simple command like “What’s the weather?”
  • No freezing or silent screen
If anything still fails, repeat the cache/data clear on both “Bixby Voice” and “Bixby Service.” In my experience, that solves 95% of cases.
