Use Face ID with Password Autofill Securely on iOS 18

With iOS 18, Apple strengthened password protection by combining Face ID with Autofill. This feature automatically fills your login credentials in apps and websites, but only after verifying your face — making it both faster and more secure. Here’s how to enable and manage it safely.

1. Open Password Settings

On your iPhone, go to Settings → Passwords. Authenticate with Face ID or your device passcode to enter the Password Manager. From here, you can manage all saved credentials synced through iCloud Keychain.

2. Enable iCloud Keychain

Face ID works with Apple’s iCloud Keychain to store and autofill passwords across devices. To enable: Settings → Apple ID → iCloud → Passwords and Keychain → ON.

This syncs your login credentials securely through end-to-end encryption — accessible only after Face ID verification.

3. Turn On Face ID for Autofill

To make Autofill secure and personalized: Settings → Face ID & Passcode → Password Autofill → ON. This ensures Face ID must confirm your identity before any password is inserted into an app or site.

💡 If you ever disable Face ID temporarily, iOS will automatically revert to requiring your device passcode for extra protection.

4. Manage Saved Passwords

Open Settings → Passwords again and tap any login entry. You can view, delete, or update passwords as needed. Use Security Recommendations to identify weak or reused passwords.

Apple automatically detects compromised credentials through the iCloud breach database and alerts you immediately.

5. Autofill in Safari and Apps

In Safari, iOS 18 prompts you to autofill login fields using Face ID whenever you visit saved websites. In apps, you’ll see a small key icon above the keyboard — tap it, then authenticate with Face ID to insert credentials instantly.

6. Turn Off Face ID for Certain Apps

If you share your iPhone with family or want to prevent password autofill for specific apps: Settings → Passwords → Password Options → Autofill Passwords → OFF (for selected apps).

This disables Face ID prompts in those apps while keeping it active system-wide.

AvNexo Tip

Face ID with Password Autofill offers enterprise-grade protection when paired with a strong passcode and Two-Factor Authentication. To maintain high security without reducing speed, regularly restart your device and clear app cache for smoother performance. Visit Performance & System for more optimization tips.
